New Beginnings at the End

Date: May 1, 2008

With the semester coming to a close, many exciting things are happening around campus! A couple weeks ago the Student Government Association elections for president and vice president were held. Crazy as I am, I decided to run for the presidency, so things have been extra crazy for me for a while. First, I had to find a running mate! Luckily, a girl named Brie, who I had approached about running with me earlier, contacted me and we became running mates. I was so excited, but that is also when all of my nerves kicked in.

There was another very qualified group running against us. We had some serious campaigning to do. We went and bought candy then spent hours making posters and taping slogans to the candy. The next step was to pass it all out. We stood many hours at the Lybyer Technology Center handing out DumDums, Smarties, and little plastic Easter eggs filled with Hershey's kisses and Butterfingers, Crunch, or Snickers. On the eggs, we wrote 'Choose the Chicks-Vote for Lacey and Brieanah for SGA!' Brie even drew sidewalk chalk around campus to help get our name out there.

Needless to say, after all of that hard work, we were both very nervous when the voting booths closed on their final day on Thursday. Jessica, the current president who was in charge of counting votes, called us in to hear the final votes on Friday morning. When the moment finally came my heart was in my stomach. Then she said, "By a 52% vote, your new SGA president and vice president-Lacey and Brieanah." A sigh of relief came upon both Brie and me. It all finally paid off.

As the story goes, we were sworn in last Thursday at the Celebration of Leaders ceremony the campus hosts each year that honors students as well as faculty and staff for all of their hard work. Now, as the semester winds down and there are only two weeks left including finals, I realize this is only a new beginning for me. I've already started doing little things for Chancellor Bennett and making appearances at events. It is a big step for me, and I've never been more excited. This is just another example of many of the opportunities offered at Missouri State University-West Plains.
