Assessment 

Mission, Goals & Objectives

Mission:

The mission of Assessment Committee is to encourage a culture of assessment for the continual improvement of student learning and to provide a framework for assessment activities that enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Goal 1: Encourage the development of a strategic assessment plan that

  1. Reviews the General Education Goals and Student Learning Outcomes (Competencies), degree program goals,discipline objectives, and course objectives;
  2. Provides linkage between the institutional goals, the General Education Goals and Student Learning Outcomes (Competencies), degree program goals, discipline objectives, and course assessment objectives; and
  3. Generates feedback for modifications to improve learning.

Goal 2: Meet the timeline projections set to implement the major components of the assessment plan.

  1. Review the timeline at each assessment meeting and its relationship to academic processes.
  2. Report the status of accomplishments at each Faculty Senate meeting.

Goal 3: Promote professional development opportunities related to assessment and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

  1. Promote professional development opportunities on assessment for allfaculty.
  2. Inform all faculty about conference opportunities in assessment.
  3. Promote incentives/release time to develop creative assessment approaches.
  4. 3.4 Continue to work on assessment learning opportunities with the Professional Development Committee.

Goal 4: Promote faculty understanding of assessment through varied, regular communication about the assessment process.

  1. Expand the Assessment Plan (Faculty Assessment Coordinator).
  2. Involve faculty in the process of developing the strategic assessment plan by assessing course objectives, discipline objectives, degree program goals, and General Education Goals and Student Learning Outcomes (Competencies).
  3. Report assessment progress regularly to all who teach through the assessment web page, newsletters, Assessment Committee minutes, and Faculty Senate minutes.

Goal 5: Locate best teaching and learning practices in assessment and encourage implementation within the University.

  1. Require assessment elements in the Master Syllabus and the course curriculum process.
  2. Continue to involve the library in on-going assessment research.
  3. Facilitate opportunities for shared assessment experiences among faculty.

Goal 6: Promote campus-wide understanding of the culture of assessment.

  1. Communicate regularly to campus constituencies.
  2. Encourage the Student Government Association to develop a resolution to support the assessment process
  3. Review the course catalog and make recommendations to add appropriate assessment statements.
  4. Review the Faculty Handbook with the goal of requiring participation in the assessment process as a part of the faculty's professional responsibilities.
  5. Provide assessment notebooks to all faculty and administration.
  6. Maintain and update the assessment web page.
