English Placement:

Placement in English courses is determined by two factors: an essay (writing sample) and the ACT score on the English portion of the test. Students who have not taken the ACT must take a multiple-choice exam on grammar and mechanics. The essay portion of the test requires students to choose from several topics and write a well-argued, coherent essay in one hour. Essay raters look for how well the writer negotiates content, organization, rhetorical (audience) awareness, sentence structure, grammar and mechanics. The multiple-choice section of the placement test has the students answer 30 questions in 30 minutes on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and clarity.

Math Placement:

In order to help students begin in the highest math class in which they are likely to be successful, students are placed according to test scores and previous classes taken. The scores on the mathematics portion of the ACT will be used for degree-seeking students and scores on the math placement test will be used to place dual enrollment students and other students admitted in the "special" category.

The math placement test is a 30-minute, timed exam covering material from high school Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. A calculator is not required for the test. However, a scientific calculator may be used. Calculators will not be provided by the testing center.
